Staying hydrated is essential for overall health, but did you know it plays a critical role in hair growth? Proper hydration impacts everything from the health of your scalp to the strength and shine of your hair.
As we investigate the importance of hydration, in this article we also explore some deliciously healthy natural drinks to keep you refreshed and your hair thriving. These recipes are perfect for those seeking holistic haircare solutions since hair grows from the inside out.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
The Role of Hydration in Hair Health
Hydration is the foundation of many bodily functions, including those that support hair growth. Believe it or not, water makes up a significant portion of our hair strands (about 15% water content, actually), and just like the rest of our body, our hair cells need water to function optimally. Without adequate hydration, hair can become dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage.
Hair is made up of approximately 15% water content. Even heating your hair to dry it can cause it to lose about 75% of its water content.
When your body is well-hydrated, it ensures that vital nutrients are effectively transported to your hair follicles. This nourishment is crucial for maintaining the hair growth cycle and promoting the development of healthy, strong hair. Additionally, a hydrated scalp is less likely to suffer from issues such as dandruff and irritation, which can hinder hair growth.
Where does hair get its hydration content from?
Hair gets its hydration primarily from the water content in the body, which is influenced by several factors:
1. Internal hydration
Water intake: The most direct source of hydration for hair is the water you consume. Staying well-hydrated ensures that water reaches all parts of your body, including hair follicles.
Blood circulation: Proper blood flow to the scalp delivers water, nutrients, and oxygen to hair follicles, which supports the production of healthy hair strands.
2. Natural oils and sebum
Sebum production: Sebaceous glands in the scalp produce sebum, a natural oil that coats hair strands, providing a layer of moisture and helping to prevent dehydration.
Lipids: The hair cuticle contains lipids that help retain moisture within the hair strand, contributing to its overall hydration.
3. Diet and nutrients
Hydration-rich foods: Consuming foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, can also contribute to the hydration of hair.
Essential fatty acids: Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, found in foods like fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, help maintain the lipid barrier of the hair, aiding in moisture retention.
4. External hydration
Hair care products: Hydrating shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments, such as the ones in our OBLOOM line, can help maintain moisture levels in hair strands. Natural humectants such as Aloe vera, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid are particularly effective in attracting and retaining moisture.
Environmental factors: Humidity in the environment can also influence the moisture content of hair. Higher humidity levels can help hair retain moisture, while low humidity can lead to dryness.
Summer Hydration: ALTERNATIVES TO 'BORING' WATER
While drinking water is the most straightforward way to stay hydrated, incorporating hydrating foods and drinks can add variety and health benefits. We know how "boring" drinking plain water can be – especially if you are drinking 2 litres of it daily.
Natural, nutrient-rich drinks can be particularly refreshing and beneficial during the summer, providing hydration and boosting vitamins and minerals that support hair health. So we compiled these healthy cocktails, which are perfect for enhancing your natural haircare routine. Give them a try!
Hydrating Recipes for Healthy Hair
Here are three delicious and hydrating drinks that will not only keep you cool, but also contribute to healthier hair because of their nutrient-rich ingredients.
Strawberry chocolate smoothie – This smoothie combines the antioxidant power of strawberries with the creamy goodness of unsweetened chocolate almond milk, creating a drink that's as nutritious as it is guilt-free and delicious!
STRAWBERRY CHOCOLATE SMOOTHIE
Who doesn't love a cold and refreshing smoothie in the summer? This smoothie combines the antioxidant power of strawberries with the creamy goodness of almond milk, creating a drink that's as nutritious as it is delicious.
Ingredients:
1 cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
1 cup unsweetened chocolate almond milk
1 tablespoon of your preferred natural sweetener (we chose monk sweetener as the strawberries already have enough natural sugars in them, and monk doesn't affect blood sugar)
a few crushed ice cubes (optional, but recommended if your strawberries are not already frozen).
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a blender.
Blend until smooth.
Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately!
The strawberries provide vitamin C, which is essential for collagen production – a protein that helps strengthen hair. Almond milk is a fantastic alternative to dairy, offering vitamin E, which supports the scalp's proper function and hair growth.
MOCK-JITO
Who doesn't love a good mojito? Refreshing mint, a bit of lemon and a dash of sweetener, it's delicious! This refreshing mocktail is perfect for summer days and combines the cooling effects of mint and lemon balm with the natural sweetness of honey. We chose to add a can of mango Bubbly rather than sparkling water, as it gives it an extra kick of tropical flavour.
Ingredients:
A handful of fresh mint leaves
A handful of fresh lemon balm leaves (they are very easy to grow yourself!)
1 tablespoon honey
Juice of 1/2 lime or lemon
1 can of sparkling water
Ice cubes
Instructions:
Add crushed ice to a glass, and muddle the squished herbs and honey into it
Top with the mango Bubbly.
Stir well and garnish with additional mint leaves or lemon wedges.
Mint and lemon balm not only refreshes but also soothes the digestive system, which can indirectly benefit hair health by ensuring better nutrient absorption. Honey adds a natural sweetness and is known for its antioxidant properties, promoting healthier hair. The citric acid content in lemon and limes helps your body absorb minerals.
GINGER LEMON COOLING-ADE
This invigorating drink combines the zing of ginger with the tartness of lemon, sweetened naturally with monk fruit sweetener (because we love our monk fruit!)
Ingredients:
3 slices of fresh organic ginger (per 8oz glass), sliced thin (you can leave the skin on if your ginger is organic – just rinse it well with water)
Juice of 1 organic lemon, plus 1 lemon rind (the skins have beneficial oils)
1 tablespoon of monk sweetener
1 can of mango Bubly (unsweetened effervescent flavoured water)
Crushed ice
Instructions:
In a pitcher, combine the ginger slices and lemon juice.
Add the monk fruit sweetener to taste.
Pour in the water and stir well.
Let the mixture sit for about 1 hour to allow the flavours to meld. Best if made the night before – make a whole pitcher of it at once!
Serve over crushed ice
Ginger aids in digestion and improves circulation, which can enhance nutrient delivery to the scalp. Lemon is rich in vitamin C, promoting overall hair health and adding a refreshing tang to this drink. In addition, the citric acid content of lemon helps your body absorb minerals, which we all need during hot months!
Remember, hydration isn't just about drinking water; it's about maintaining a balance of fluids and nutrients that keep your body and hair healthy.
